I have been told that not everyone is capable of performing exceptionally well.Apparently some students are 'gifted' in academics e.g maths and sciences(tough subjects) while other are either not gifted or they just have average intelligence. Is it possible for an average student through sheer determination to achieve as the so called gifted people i.e straight A's. Could i please have brutal honesty answers.i want to know the truth.Thanking everyone in advance

i think its possible with studying and determination. but the smart kids have an advantage. from the time when i was in first grade to 8th grade i didnt have to study anything, including spelling and i got straight a's. by the time i was in 9th grade and actually had to study i was getting phenomenal grades with the studying but it was hard to keep myself motivated. i think determined kids are better off in the long run. smart kids are just talented but often do not have determination.

You are describing my sister and I. I have the ability--she has the determination. She is always complaining about my ability to pass any test, whip out a report or 20 page paper...however, I always felt that she has the real advantage. Everything I learn goes into short term memory, after a period of time, I don't remember specific facts anymore--just general info because I really don't learn, I just manipulate the information. On the other hand, she remembers absolutely everything she learns, because she has worked hard at learning the information.

Some kids who have determination can excel, but not all. It really depends upon the level of cognitive ability [which really can NOT be measured]. It is different for each person--my advice is to be as supportive as possible, without being too pushy.

I have seen truly amazing success from students who try and persevere while more gifted students often make no effort and achieve little. Perseverance and determination can make a world of difference.

Yes!! A student of average ability can, with sufficient effort, be an 'A' student. Absolutely yes. And many do.

Great question !
I'd vote for sheer , burning determination plus sustained efforts.
Why ?
If you are gifted , you'd be able to excel in that area only. While a person with sheer determination is likely to excel in most of the things in life.
Great poet Kalidas & inventor Thomas Alva Edison were regarded as dumb with no talent, but with determination , they were able to achieve unbelievable heights !

"Gifted" students are considered so because of parental backing and other circumstances. I believe that if the average student was determined to reach the academic level of the gifted students, they could achieve that. If anyone works hard enough and persistantly enough, they will eventually attain whatever goals they want.

could be possible if student has a lot of training and dedication

but even with that if the student has limitations (no offense) then there is only so far that s/he can go
