Although it is hard to understand, scientists believe that before the big bang there was nothing. The big bang started from a point in space (Whether it be actual or theoretical, i don't know) called a singularity. But before the big bang the dimensions that we understand didn't exist and there was a totally different set of physical rules that our human minds can't understand... It's wierd stuff really.
