valerian root is great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it's a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can't turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it's 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it's worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.

WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze (side note on booze and ambien cr: booze plus ambien seem to mess with the ability to have a deep and peaceful night's sleep, so if you're going to drink do it hours before you go to bed), in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here's what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:

diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:

Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.

also look at the links on the website i've listed they have some good alternative remedies!

I hope this helps!

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Skullcap(herb) might help. Herb store usually have the blend of herbs that help you sleep. Also try this....People who suffer from sleepless night should make lettuce a regular part of their evening meal. A calcium deficiency in the body causes restlessness and wakefulness. Magnesium deficiency is responsible for nervousness that prevents sleep. Vitamin B complex or B6 deficiency can causes insomnia. Also helpful to take Niacin and Melatonin before bedtime. Exercise in fresh air during the day but not in the late evening. Drive the blood away from the head will help. Apply a cold-water pack to the back of the head and neck just before going to bed. Warm feet are important. Keep the regular routine of going to bed at the same time every night. One hour of sleep before midnight has the equivalent value of two hour's sleep after midnight. Keep bedroom dark. Sleep in a natural-fiber linens and nightwear. Take time to unwind. Do not go to bed angry.

Hello! It sounds like you are over-stressed which is the cause of you not being able to sleep. Melatonin is a safe and wonderful way to "quiet" your thoughts and get you a good night's sleep. You can buy Melatonin at any drug store, Wallmart, etc. And a bottle of 60 tablets only costs around 3.99. All Melatonin tablets come in a 1mg tablet. I started out taking 4 tablets a night and then weaned myself down to none after I started sleeping normal again.

Theres a chinese herb called suan zao ren, also known as sour jujube, or zizyphus seed.

It facilitates sleep pretty well without leaving you groggy on waking. The simplest ways to take it, are in an aqueous or alcohol extract, thus in a boiled tea (about 6-15 grams of the crushed seed, simmered for 30 min), or tincture, about 30 minutes before bed. There are several different formulas using this herb as chief ingredient, with formula varying according to the particular pattern of insomnia.

Exercise and fresh air.......... We don't need too much. I passed advanced maths with well above an A+ whilst only getting an average of 4-5 hours sleep a night. Plus cat napping is cool too.
