Hi, I just moved to Houston from Sacramento last November. I'd give anything to be able to move back. The humidity keeps me indoors, and I used to walk for my health in Sacramento. I don't know enough to tell you about schools, yet, but in a city of 4.5 million people, there must be some very good ones. I must say that Houstonians are more polite than Californians. But the best place to raise children is Sacramento.

The real estate market is cheaper here, but again, there are so many foreclosures in Sacramento, you might be able to buy a house there for much less than it's worth. In both places the ability to get a loan for a house will be more challenging than ever. Rent in Houston are cheaper than Sacramento, by far.

There are many car dealerships in Houston, so he might have an easier time finding a job here than in Sacramento, just a guess, though. Don't leave your current jobs or housing until you actually have a job somewhere else, just to be sure you don't really suffer without a job for a while.
You may email me through my profile if you have more questions.

If you come to Houston, keep in mind the city is large. As the fourth largest metro area in the US (Behind New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago), Houston is over 600 square miles.

The traffic is not pleasant for long commutes if you're heading toward downtown (there's another post about living in Houston without a car that can attest to this). Born in the Central Valley of California, I now live just south of Tomball, between the Tomball area and the Cypress area. The schools are top rated, but you pay for it in your taxes. Traffic is not bad over here, but I don't commute downtown except for about once a month; that trek is between 1 and 1.5 hours each way depending on the time of day. I'm sure that there are nice neighborhoods within the 610 loop and even the 8 belt (known also as the Sam Houston Tollway in parts), but I'm quite happy outside the 8 belt.

As you're in Northern California, a key difference here is the weather. Depending on what part of N. Cali you're in, you may be used to heat (Sacramento, etc.), but that heat does not include the wonderful humidity that we see here as we're right off the gulf. It takes some getting used to. Dallas being further inland is not as humid, they get colder weather and even snow and ice storms in the winter -- a rarity in Houston.

If you are into sports Dallas has the Mavericks (NBA), Cowboys (NFL), and the Stars (NHL). Houston has the Rockets (NBA), Texans (NFL), and Astros (MLB). Houston also has the most WhatABurgers in the world (54). Personally I like Houston better but to raise a family I think that the best choice would be Dallas.

Between the 2, Dallas is better.

Some good suburbs for schools are Plano and Frisco. They are also upscale and nice areas.

I live in Dallas and would not want to move to Houston. Dallas is more laid back.

Well if I was you, I'd pick another state, but if you really want Texas, I would pick Austin. Houston is boring, and the only people who like Houston are the ones who were born and raised here.

Odd, I wasn't born here, and I like it just fine.

Houston over Dallas.
