SAS (special air service) was formed during bitter fighting in North Africa in 1941.The British realized they are in immediate need of special units that would operate behind enemy lines, disrupting communications, logistics and enemy activity in general. In North Africa alone, they were at first hunting German supply depots in the desert, because an army in desert without supplies is a non existing army, lol.Their second task was preparing the ground for American landings in North Africa and later in Italy, finally Normandy.Their first member was Jack Grillo which died in combat behind enemy lines in North Africa in 1941. while on mission of finding some enemy documents.SAS name obviously has nothing to do with SAS real actions...Here is the story about this:As the Germans had total supremacy in 1941. they were monitoring all British activities and knew quite a lot about their enemy...So,trying to avoid Germans spotting the creation of the new special unit which might change the course of war,British got the idea of calling the special unit-special air service because they wanted to make Germans think they are actually making a non-combat unit, for maintaining airplane efficiency.SAS main advantage was (and still is) in their speed and secrecy. They usually operated in four member teams, lurking in desert, staying behind enemy lines for weeks even months.Their success rate was high in WW2 and Hitler himself said they are a dangerous group of men to be exterminated by any means with great caution.
P.S.i forgot to say SAS are really sharpshooters,I think some of the most precise men with firearms in whole world.

The Special Air Service (SAS) is the principal special forces organization of the British Army. Formed in 1941 to conduct raids behind German lines in North Africa, with the Long Range Desert Group, it today serves as a model for similar units fielded by other countries. The SAS is a small and secretive organization, but attracts a disproportionate amount of media coverage. It forms part of the United Kingdom Special Forces, alongside the Special Boat Service (SBS), Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) and the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG). The SAS is widely regarded as one of the finest and best-trained special forces units in the world.

David Sterling formed L Detachment, Special Air Service, in 1941. They conducted operations with the assistance of the Long Range Desert Group--but were never a part of that unit. By war's end, the SAS was two regiments strong. Inactivated at the end of the war, it was activated again in the 1950's for operations in Malaya, having been redisgnated as the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artist's Rifles) as the result of a post-war amalgamation with another infantry unit in the Territorial Army.

The best way by far is to join the Parachute regiment as although as previously stated they will recruit from any unit however paratroopers have direct access and the majority of SAS soldiers are recruited from our airborne units. Our 1st battalion is now attached to special forces support group who do joint operations with SAS and provide ground cover/extractions/transportation's etc for the SF units, and are regarded as 2nd only to SAS/SBS so obviously taking this route will give you a major advantage. You must serve minimum 3 years as as soldier before you can apply they usually have 2 initial induction courses per year where they will asses your physical and mental qualities regardless of academic qualifications ( unless you're thinking of an officer role) But most people who want to become SAS will join the Parachute Regiment first google SFSG (special forces support group) i would take this route. Edit. You need 3 years service not 12 as stated above, i'm pretty sure the max age for selection is 34 years old but not 100% sure.

The SAS can trace its existence back to 1941, when British Army volunteers conducted raids behind enemy lines in the North African Campaign of World War II.

The SAS was originally the Long Range Deasert Group. This was formed to raid deap behind enemy lines. Their vehicles were quite distinctive, as they tended to be trucks/jeeps that were loaded with supplies and armed to the teath. They relied of suprise and speed, attacking airfields and supply lines.
They were also involved in the European offensive. I believe that Osprey do a reasonable book about them.
