A few songs off the top of my head would be:
Alice In Chains - "Down in a Hole"
Type O Negative - "Die With Me"
Nine Inch Nails - "Hurt", "The Great Below", etc...
All 3 bands have several other songs that would qualify.

"Tears In Heaven" Eric Clapton

"I'm Not The One" The Cars (from their album "Shake It Up")

"Dog And Butterfly" Heart (Strange title--but brings a tug to the heart and a tear to the eye).

"Behind Blue Eyes" The Who

"Tuesday Afternoon" The Moody Blues (this one is POWERFULLY SAD, but with a beauty that is timeless).

"Shannon" Do a Limewire on this one--it's out there and it qualifies (it's about a beloved dog who died).

Anything by David Gates and Bread

"Candle In The Wind" Elton John (written before Diana died, he re-wrote it and dedicated the song to her memory--a timeless act of dignity and class).

"The Rambler" by Molly Hatchet (a surprising slow sad but powerful love story, told in music).

"Elenor Rigby" Done by the Beatles, wonderfully redone by Kansas. ( This poweful song tugs at the heart ).

"A Day In The Life" Again, The Beatles ( "I saw a film to-day oh-boyyyyy.....about a lucky man who just made the grade" )

Eric Clapton - "Tears in Heaven"

It's about his son who was dropped from a high building when he was only four. Maybe not dropped, but he died. Very sad song if you listen to the lyrics, and really good.
