Wireless adapter lets you connect to a network or the internet without the use of an ethernet cable. A PCI or USB type of wireless adapter should work on a desktop PC. You just need to install its driver then configure it so that it could connect to an available wireless network.

A wireless adapter just grabs a signal (sort of like a cell phone, or cordless phone) and that card receives and transmits data. And Sure a desktop can use it.
Also if you are referring to the mobile wireless services that verizon, sprint and some other networks have that uses cell tower signals to go on the internet. The other one requires a wireless router.

Wireless adapters use radio waves to communicate with each other. In fact they use some of the same frequencies as cordless phones (notice I did not say CELLULAR phones!)
Desktop PCs can use Wireless adapters. Most often they take USB adapters, or PCI slot adapters that have to be installed inside the PC.
When you install them, make sure you use the HIGHEST LEVEL OF ENCRYPTION that is supported by both your adapter and router. Low-level encryption is easy to crack over the air waves.

What do you mean "how does it work?".
First you buy a wireless router, then you buy the card for your desktop pc that connects to the router..simple as that.
