Ok I understand how to simplify in class with these easy examples we get but I get hom and I get

x^2 x^6
______
x^3

Now when we get these x's I get confused. Any help and explanation is appreciated. Also if you know any good sites that would be helpfull. Thanks

Basically you just need to remember the properties of exponents. They should be located in your math book. For this particular problem, you should solve it in this way.

Step 1: Simplify numerator to x^8. (When you multiply exponents with the same base, such as x^2 * x^6, you can add the exponents together)

Step 2: Simplify fraction to x^5. (When you divide exponents with the same base, such as x^8/x^3, you can subtract the exponent of the denominator from the exponent of the numerator.

Answer: x^5

if there is x's on as the coefficinent ur ok to add the powers if they are multiplied together

x^2*x^6= x^(2+6)
x^8

then when x's are the coefficient and u r dividing its a matter of subtracting the powers

x^8 / x^3= x^(8 - 3)
= x^5

The answer is x^5 :

(x^2*x^6)/x^3 =
(x^(2+6))/x^3=
x^8/x^ 3=
x^(8-3)=x^5

thing to remember is if the bases are the same you can add the exponents and when you divide you then subtract the exponents
x^8/x^3

= x^5

x^2 x^6
______ work on top. x^n * x^m = x^(n+m), so
x^3

x^8
------- , now, x^n/x^m = x^(n-m), or
x^3

x^(8-3) = x^5. done.

x^8 / x^3 = x^5

Rules
Multiply-->Add indices-->(x^a)(x^b) = x^(a + b)
Divide-->Subtract indices-->x^a / x^b = x^(a - b)
