invite friends and family of the mom
have party games and refreshments
open presents
You don't really need a theme, since the theme is "baby"
fun games are:
have a list of animals, people have to think of the baby names for those animals like cow:calf, horse:foal, duck:duckling. and some hard ones you wouldn't think of like a baby shark, eagle, or eel
candy bar diaper game. have some disposable diapers, smash up a different kind of chocolate bar in each one, people have to guess what kind of candy bar that was. Looks so gross, but its fun.

Normally whoever is giving the shower does the work, but you could offer to help. Most of the ones I have been to start with playing a few games to kind of break the ice. There are games that are used to intoduce everyone also. Then comes the food. You can either just have cake and punch or lunch depending on the time of day. Then comes the best part. You opening the gifts. You can have it at a church if someone is a member of one close by or you can have it in someone's home. I would say next week is a little soon to be having it if invitations have not even been sent out yet. Good luck with whatever you do and good luck with the baby.

I hope that your friend is throwing the shower and not suggesting that you throw one for yourself. Usually a close friend or family member will host the shower. People that come will bring presents for the baby, kinda like a birthday party. There is usually some amount of food involved, depending on what time of day it is...could be just cake a punch or light appetizers or a bigger luncheon type meal. Sometimes people will play different games at the shower, usually revolving around the mother and/or the baby. Have fun and take lots of pictures!

A Baby Shower is an event at which guests (traditionally female, but now days it's common for men to attend as well) bring gifts for the baby and mother, eat food such as a cake, punch, etc, and play various games to win small prizes. Baby showers are usually hosted by a friend or family member of the mother-to-be (or new mother, sometimes people wait until after the baby is born, but it's more common to have one before) The whole point of the party is to help the mother obtain items for the baby that she needs (and mothers commonly register for gifts at local department stores for items they desire/need and send information for the registry in their invitations) and to celebrate the coming of a new baby.

Generally a group of women get together. The expectant mother opens gifts. There are often refreshments. At some baby showers the attendees just sit around and visits. Sometimes they have cute games or give advice to the mother.
By the way, it is considered improper for the mother or her family to throw a baby shower for herself. If one of your friends offers to do it, fine. But otherwise it might look like you are being greedy.

Gifts, food, belly rubbing, and games with small prizes (like candles, bath stuff, etc.). Some game suggestions:
Everyone wears a safety pin. If you see anyone crossing their legs, you can take their pin. The person with the most pins at the end wins a prize.
Everyone is given a little diaper made out of a napkin. One "diaper" has mustard in it. The one with the messy diaper wins a prize.
Carry around a tray loaded with baby stuff, like a bottle, pins, a bib, a nose aspirator, etc. Let everyone look at what's on the tray. Take the tray out of the room while everyone writes what they saw on the tray. The one with the most right wins.
Guess the belly size. Every woman is allowed to cut a piece of string large enough to fit around the mom-to-be's belly. The one who gets closest to exact fit wins.
I love baby showers! :) Have fun!

It's a party to celebrate the mother-to-be. Your friends and relatives will be there. There will be funny games and contests played - like, who can change a doll's diaper the fastest. Nowadays, a baby shower can be co-ed, with both men and women. I think they are more hilarious and fun than just women. The guests will bring presents for the new baby, and sometimes pampering for the mom.

I've never been to 2 alike. My favorite one gave us all a piece of clay to make a baby. So, I made a baby boy (she was having a baby boy) in fetal position, complete with proper anatomy and even the details of wrinkles & foot creases. Most of the baby showers that I've been to had a silly game to play or word search of baby items. One baby shower that I went to asked us all to suggest a name for the baby girl after watching her on the sonogram video. I suggested the name that she was actually given: Angela Faith. Your friends & family need to throw the party for you.

at baby showers you often eat, accept presents, think of baby names and play baby games...its more fun if a close friend organizes it for you or with you...an odd but fun game i once played was to melt different chocolate candies into diapers and pass it around the room having each person invited smell the candy and guess what it was...the winner would get a small prize...the games are often geared toward baby stuff...

You get lots of gifts! From diapers to clothes, to stollers, etc... You invite all family and friends and they bring you gifts for the baby. If you create a registry and let everyone know about it, the guests will know what you want instead of buying things you wouldn't like.
