I've found the best way to clean my hubbies hats, no matter the color is by using water, cool or warm, Woolite. And a manicure brush- heres a link to a pic of the type of brush I use.

This totally works. Plus Woolite came out with a wash specifically for darks, so thats will keep the black part of your hat, nice and rich.
