Selfishness.
People want things their way, are stubborn to subordinate to one another's wishes. Society today tells us to only consider ourselves. Obey? Subordinate? Out of the question. If a relationship is not working (which it can't under such conditions) just drop out.
Adultery/Porn
Married folks often can't trust each other anymore in this area.

I saw a show about divorces and they talked about how years ago when couples were going through a tough time, it was called "the~7~year~itch"....and today, it's more like the "2~year~itch"....it's because we get bored so easily.
And the Internet has alot to do with it. There's Dating Sites and Porn Sites and basically people feel like they work hard all week and if there isn't that excitement to go home to, they go out....meet people from on line or work and drink and let loose.
We had a President who got B~J's in the oval office...we've got priests who violate children...we've got celebrities who are with a different partner every week....and we're not even shocked by any of it these days.
And of course getting a divorce is as easy as getting married.
I'm not trying to be negative...it's just the way it seems to be.

Because the U.S. is free. With said, let me add that nearly no one is prepared to do a little "give & take" though they agree to it in the marriage vows. Divorce is so rampant that you don't even need a reason anymore. Irreconcilable differences only means "I am not willing to put up with you any longer" or something like that, right? An annullment is a disgrace because it simply means I"I had a change of heart..I don't love you this much as I said I did. I want some other body to lay beside". Humh!

Higher than what? It's been somewhere near 50% for nearly 60 years, and that's lower than a lot of places that allow divorce, and it's higher than some places that allow divorce.

I guess it's generally higher here than places that do not allow divorce.

I think you have made some false assumptions and are looking for a particular answer based on those assumptions. You might want to revisit your assumptions if you want to have a meaningful discussion on the topic.

The divorce rate climbed once "irreconcilable differences" became a reason for people to divorce. That's the technical answer. :)

Perhaps because their Constitution guarantees "the pursuit of happiness" which some interpret to mean "If I'm not happy, its not worth the effort". Just a thought.
