Most utility companies, for instance will work with the homeowner, and let you make split payments. This is where you pay half the bill one week, and then the balance before the due date. A lot of times they will give you an extension to pay the bill in full. This really helps.

If you are both considered low income, the utilitity companies have a program to assist you with where your rates are based at a lower rate. But, you have to qualify. They can go over the guidelines with you. Since you are both unemployed, you should be eligible. Check it out.

I find my gas rates to be so high, that it is often cheaper for me to run an electric heater on a thermostat in my bedroom at night, rather than expect an old insufficient gas furnace to heat my home. But, I live in California, and it doesn't snow where I am, so our winters are milder than back east.

I hope things get better for the both of you. Just keep each other warm in the winter!

Don't pay your bills and insight a riot or better yet steal a mail truck and go joy riding. That way when you get arrested you'll get all you bills covered a roof over your head, and three full square meals a day. How's that sound you'll never have to work again of course you'll never see your children again either or your husband ever again. Well there are draw backs to everything.

Cut back. If you aren't working, you should be going thru all you bills looking for things to cut out.

Cell phone -- cancel; Landline phone -- cancel call waiting and similar extra fee services. Cancel the line maintenance too; Cable -- cancel; Internet -- use a freebie or at least a $10 cheap dial up; Reset the thermostat to us less power (up for AC; down for heat); Groceries -- cut out all junk food, processed convenience foods.

Basically, you have to learn to live within your means.
