Had your parents gone deep into this question, you wouldn't be here to ask it

Many faiths have different reasons for having children, such as LDS followers believing that by having many children, they are that much closer to being in heaven as there are just so many 'souls' awaiting to be born. After the last one is born, then, according to their faith, that is when they ascend into heaven.

But I don't think that's what you meant by your question. Everyone has different reasons for having children. I think that the reason to have children is to leave something in this world after we are gone. We are all destined to die. But by having children (who hopefully have children, etc.) we are in effect leaving a legacy and achieve some measure of immortality.

We also can pass on our experience, knowledge, etc. to our children and therefore 'continue' our existence.

Others do it for the joy of having children. You cannot really know that joy unless you have children. It's like trying to describe sight to a blind person. You can get the concept, but there will always be something lacking that you just can't get without experiencing it.

If you don't know, then you shouldn't. And don't let anyone convince you that you should. But I'm glad I do. :)

Outside the Box: Hmmm... if we all leave it to only the uneducated, chemically dependent, etc, etc. to have children, then what hope is there for the world?

So there you go- another good reason to have kids: We can raise them to better the world. To offset the bad in the world.

Because you are mature, committed to the joys AND CHALLENGES of parenting, and because you understand and accept that your life as you know it is going to end for at least 18 years. If any of the above doesn't ring true - don't do it yet. If it's because you think it would be fun, or so that you have someone to love you, or to improve your relationship with your mate - don't do it.

Since the creation of condoms and other birth control measures, you don't have to have children to have fun. I have a bunch of kids, and the gypsies won't take them no matter how much I offer

We should not. The uneducated, chemical dependant, and unmotivated people are having most of them.
People usually have children for the following reasons:
Accidents (in other words irresponsible people, like most of my friends)
Social Taboo (it is considered un-cool not to have them).
Peer and family pressure (nuff said)
Most people regret having children. Most of us that do not, have no regrets. I am 41, and Childfree by choice.

Years ago I heard a saying that kind of explained it. The original one had a christian bent to it & I changed it somewhat to pagan but it goes like this:

Babies are the Divine's way of saying that life needs to go on.

at least it was something like that. Children are our hope for the future. With out hope we are nothing........

To be brutally honest, I have always said that I don't want any. Lately I have been reconsidering this simply because I want my final possessions and $$ (whatever and how much or little it may be) to go to someone I know and (preferably) love. That's it, for me.

it is often heard to become a good writer you need to have experienced sorrow. something like that.... children make us realize that life is painful and no big deal. so it makes us philosophical.
