There's no telling how long we'll have to wait to see the Toronto Maple Leafs hoist the Stanley Cup but I do think they have a good chance this year. I see Jason Blake adding some much needed, experienced, skillful offense and from what other western conference teams have said about Vesa Toskala, he is dynamite when you need him most. We have some great prospect hope in Jeremy Williams, Justin Pogge, Tony Salmelainen and Stefan Kronvall. Andrew Raycroft was very sharp and alert last night in Winnipeg so I say we might actually get to the second round of the play-offs this year. But it will be quite a few more years before the Leafs become Cup worthy.

P.S. We've got great young talent in Alexander Steen, Kyle Wellwood, Carlo Coliacolvo, Mat Stajan and Chris Newbury. Mats Sundin adds leadership and diligence to the squad...what more can we ask for?

This Leafs fan's communication skills and intelligence DOES represent all other Leafs fans and people in Toronto.

Go Leafs, regardless...and sadly.

Whoa!! A smart Leafs fan in the form of leafspwnhabs!! Dude, tell me, do you live in Toronto? That'll make a total of five smart people here! I live in Toronto and I hate everybody in it.

Now, just to jump into this debate, Cloudcity, you're right. Management doesn't care about winning, all they care are dollar signs. However, most Leafs fans know that we won't be getting the Cup anytime soon. As long as the Leafs are majority owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension (yes, a bunch of useless high school teachers owns the Leafs....very sad), the only Cup that will be in Toronto is the Display Cup sitting in the Hall of Fame. Where's your evidence that Leafs fans always think that this is the year? The guy asking the question? ONE person?

And leafspwnhabs, do you seriously think that we will win the Cup with just the two additions of Blake and Toskala? Ferguson frakked the team up bad. High draft picks for him and Bell? Keeping that useless ti't on a nun Antropov instead of shipping his as$ to San Jose instead? (Yes, I realize that he was signed before the trade, but Antropov shouldn't have a no-trade clause.) Or how about Maurice last year? "We're going to ride Raycroft from the All-Star break all the way to the end." Um....he's human, not the Terminator no matter how much you want him to be, dumb-as$. That strategy alone is what caused our downfall last year in missing the playoffs. With management skills like that, I'll be very surprised if we even make the Finals.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Leafs fan and I want them to win, but let's be realistic here. leafspwnhabs, there is a bandwagon on anti-Leafs, but they're right. They don't have a clue as to how they got to being right, but they're right. It will be a cold day in hell when the Leafs win the Cup under this regime. What they need is a single owner to call the shots. But no one has that kind of money, unfortunately, not even Baisille.

leafspwnhabs; the Leafs have not changed enough from last season to even ensure that they make the playoffs. The only changes were an upgrade to goaltending (it remains to be seen if adding Toskala actually improves their Goaltending or not) and adding Blake (scoring was not the problem) oh and I forgot Bell (someone who played so badly for the Sharks that they forced Toronto to take him and his contract along with Toskala; and somehow, despite not winning a stanley cup in 40 years, those changes and the fact that their veterans are another year closer to retirement is supposed to bring them from not even qualifying for the playoffs to a Stanley Cup ?

can I have some of whatever your smoking ? and people rip into the leafs because they can see the obvious that leaf fans cannot; that the ownership doesn't care if they win a Stanley Cup or not, they sell out their tickets at the highest price in the NHL anyways and with a team that is never at the salary cap (or well under the other teams salaries pre-salary cap). The players want to win a Stanley cup but they're not going to get any help from the higher ups.

Sounds like you might not want to hold your breath.
I think their offence is ok, defence is slower than needed, but otherwise ok, as well. Toskala should prove to be above average. All in all, I'd say they make the playoffs by a safe margin, not top 4, though. Maybe surprise somebody in the first round, then go home. I don't see a cup this year either.
Oh, wait a minute, they just beat Phoenix 3-2.
As I was saying, the parade starts at Lakeshore, up Younge St. and ....

Sometime between now and never. A lot can change in a few years.... but even if the Leafs put up a good team, they have no control over what other teams do. In any case, give Toskala a chance. He chased Kipprusoff out of San Jose and almost won the job over Nobokov. He won't make the defense good, but he'll be better than average.

The Leafs are the Philadelphia Eagles of the NHL. They are perennially ranked as a contender, I am guessing because of Mats Sundin who is a great player undoubtedly. However, they seem to think they are smarter than everyone else and as a result, shoot themselves in the foot each season. My guess as to when they will win another championship is when they change ownership and realize that they either need to rebuild or go full tilt at free agents. Either way, they need to get off the fence.

CME: Make the same offer with Bob Loblaw's wife and we have a bet!!!! Sorry Bob, it needed to be done. No worries, your wife is not in jeapardy.

Things that will happen before the Leafs win another cup:

Yashin will win an MVP award
Don Cherry will become a commentator for a European league
Bettman will lead the NHL to its greatest age of prosperity
Columbus and Phoenix will win cups
Crosby will break all of Gretzkys records
Rory Fitzpatrick will make the all star team
Bertuzzi will be praised and loved by all fans of the NHL
Chelios will retire (maybe not)
Buffalo will quit complaining about Hulls foot being in the crease
The Habs will be moved to Mexico to bring in a new fan base (wait, actually, I could really see Bettman doing this, being the genius that he is)

The Leafs organization will get motivated to put a contender together when there are empty seats for their games. Since the latter will never happen, the Leafs will never win another Stanley Cup.

I love how all the sheeple retards jump on the anti-leafs bandwagon just because it is the 'popular' thinking and because everyone else is doing it. It is quite pathetic. It is much like zit faced high school students in their 'anti leafs clique' thinking they are cool because they each support the others ignorance. The Leafs will in fact win the cup before Ottawa or the Habs even come close to having another chance to do anything other than being mediocre. Pogge sucks? Says who? Not Joe Bowen, not Paul Maurice, not a whole lot of other people who actually know what they are talking about and not talking out there a$s.You watched him play one game, which by the way thanks to his goal tending resulted in said game going to a shootout. Not a blowout by any stretch. This season ,providing that everyone stays healthy, Sundin, Ponikarovsky,Blake(after 15 games),Stajan,Steen, tucker,Kab rele, and McCabe are all big names, are all uber talented, and will be such a force to be reckoned with it is unreal. So before all you nay sayers talk again maybe you should get your facts straight, become real hockey fans, and not just go on what the bandwagon says.

how can you say raycroft and Pogge Suck? :|:|

Raycroft tied the league for most wins in a season by 1 goaltender.

Pogge put up an AMAZING performance in their first preseason game, even though they lost, pogge was defenetly a good reason why they only lost by one.
