Now, what kind of silly question is this? Don't you realize that you have a President by the name of George Bush backed by his Republican henchmen that are daily constructing new laws, rules, regualtions to give the people of the world freedom and liberty? Look at the beautiful job he/they are doing in Iraq today. Feel very comfortable with this diligent crew performing their dasterdly duties in ruining the Constituation.

Recent news on the Internet is filled about stories about "habeas corpus" issues, censorship of news stories, domestic spying without warrants, Guantanamo Bay, silent blacklisting of artists with anti-war messages, torture of prisoners, CIA involvment in illegal drug and weapons trade, and CIA involvement in destabilizing governments.

A very interesting interpretation of that phrase has to do the presumption that the United States would be separated and free from the entrapments of the old world because of Americas geography (separated by the two oceans). This ties into a shift in our thinking after 9/11/2001. (The anniversary is a current event and the fact that our liberties and civil rights are constantly being challenged in the name of security.) This is expressed elegantly in an article:

Here is a quote from this source:

"Akhil Reed Amar expounds a bit of his geostrategic theory of liberty in conjunction with the 9/11 tragedy in an article entitled, "A Mid-September Meditation: How September 11 Mapped Onto the Framers' Theory of Geostrategic Theory of Liberty" (H/T Opinio Juris). He makes the resounding point that the Framers' wrote the Constitution with the intent that the United States would be separated from the old world and, consequently, the troubles of the old world, by the Atlantic ocean, and, eventually, the Pacific ocean. He argues that the geostrategic invulnerability of the United States is an essential ideological truss supporting the tenets of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. However, that truss buckled when the WTC toppled and American blood was spilled on the soil of the continental United States for the first time in 150 years."

I think that the shredding of the bill of rights and our constitution due to the Patriot Act and other more recent severe constraints on our liberties are very relevant. The fact that an American was declared and enemy combatant and held without proper legal representation or rights at Guantanamo Bay, is a real threat to every American. The three branches of the government was set up as a balance of power. Unfortunately, the executive branch has taken the power of all three branches. The only way to re-establish a balance of power (to allow the ongoing blessings of liberty) is to impeach the president. Any president who exceeds his authority needs to be impeached. Otherwise, we end up with an imperial monarchy.
