"There is no doubt now that vitamin C in large doses has value against the common cold. My recommendation is not 1 gram a day, or 2 grams a day of vitamin C but at the first sign of a cold, take a gram of vitamin C or 2 grams and then an hour later, if the symptoms still exist - if you're still sneezing, or your nose is running or feel shivery, take another 1 or 2 grams of vitamin C. Keep doing that until you forget because the symptoms have gone away and this will stop a cold in almost every person who follows the regimen."

High doses of Vitamin C can cause cramping and diarrhea, so it must be increased gradually to avoid this.

I have heard the theory before... they all say it is unproven and some say it is not true, whereas some find that although it doesn't stop their cold it decreases the time they have the cold?

Here is some more information about your theory....

Well I heard of taking 500 grams of Calcium and 1000 grams of vitamin C every hour until a cold or an infection goes away. I would recommend green tea for a cold. It really helped me out.

There's this stuff at Long's Drugs you can buy called "Airborne" and it has a ton of vitamins and not just "C". It works miracles as far as killing a cold. I trumped a very bad cold going around at work by using Airborne and Echinacea in combonation together. It has to be taken on a regular basis when signs of the cold first appear daily for about four days and four times a day like you would use an antibiotic. It works very very well, I wouldn't have believed had I not used this and beat the cold that was going around!

I do something like this and it WORKS EVERY TIME.
I take 250 mg every hour as soon as I start to feel a cold coming on, until I finally forget to take them because I'm not feeling sick anymore. I do also try to take 250 mg a day, but I've been more relaxed about that. I just could not tolerate taking such high doses for so long, too much vitamin c makes me nauseous so I stick with the lowest dose I can find.
WORKS LIKE A CHARM!!

Although Linus Pauling won a Nobel prize in biochemistry, he in later years became obsessed with the idea that Vitamin C could cure anything including cancer. He died of cancer. Best treatment for a cold is still rest and fluids.

BTW only vitamin D is Toxic in large doses. ie deadly the only natural sources with enough to be deadly are Polar Bear Liver and Bearded Sear Liver.

There is no cure for the common cold. There are herbs that may help prevent you from catching it, such as those found in Airborne. Taking a large dose of vitamin C before catching a cold will also help reduce the risk of catching one. Only taking medicines such as Dayquil will reduce the severity of the symptoms.

Have you ever tried Airborne? It's an over the counter all encompassing vitamin pill that you dissovle in water and drink it. It really works when you feel a cold coming on. It not only has Vitamin C in it, it has all sorts of other herbs that are supposed to help your immunity system. It's also safe and convenient.

I would definitely intake lots of vitamin C. When a cold hits, continuing the vitamin C (orange juice..etc), getting a lot of sunshine (your body produces natural vitamin D when exposed to sunlight), and smile a lot. Hope you don't get the cold bug this comming flu season. Good luck.

Be careful taking large quantities of vitamins. Some are toxic including E and some of the B vitamins.

If you do this, DON'T take multivitamins.

Linus pauling a very respected chemist and scientist........unfortunately this theory has never been proved. Whilst vitamin c may help prevent the onset of a cold, and possibly help it along, no study has proven it.
