I am just wondering cause my girl's 11 year old friend Cori (a girl) got in trouble today with my neighbor who is a cop for taking his daughter Anna's basketball and saying it was hers, because he knows Cori (her and Anna and my girls play together every day) he went easy on her and just said she could'nt play with Anna anymore, I was just wondering what could have happened if he was'nt so nice.

In most states, juveniles as young as 8-10 can be charged for offenses. And it doesn't matter that it's only something as "simple as a basketball." I have kids on my caseload who received probation for stealing a pack of gum or a candy bar.

As an 11 year old, the child will probably be offered a program of Informal Adjustment. This is like a diversion program for juveniles, and the child will not have to go to court, although she will have most of the same probation terms that she'd have if she did go to court.

Yes, taking someone else's personal belongings without permission is theft. At 11, they should know better, but they don't think about the consequences. Usually though, it's more a way to put a little fear in them, than real juvie time. I would definitely tell my child they were going to jail and let them think about it at the very least. Better a little scared now, then visiting them in real jail later in life.

yes. definitly i would go give the basketball back and make some sort of a peace offering before you are known as a thief. and theft is a felony offense GO NOW! and is a crime punishable with ten years in prison my g-pa was police officer so i should know!

juvenile laws and adult laws are handles much differently.they can be charged but very little if anything will be done.in alot of the cases the parents are brought to court. thet are responsible for their kids acts until a certain age.i am very suprised that there was even a case filed.

An 11 year old???....no where I know about....but I live in Canada. Nearly every province has a young offenders act which keeps children 11 and under from being prosecuted criminally.

Well, that would depend on your jurisdiction.

The age that a kid can be charged with an offense, and what constitutes an offense, depends on the jurisdiction you're in.

Yes. Even if i left every window and door open on my house, even if i put all my belongings on my front lawn and left them, it is illegal for someone to come into my house or come on my lawn and take my belongings. they are on my property, not public property, and they are mine and nobody can say otherwise. an lying about it? that just makes it worse.
