A lot of each. It depends on the application for which is best. Alkaline have a long life (lots of power) and also have a long shelf life (way over 5 years). Re-chargeable are cheaper over all but have less power of alkaline (less run time) and they self dis-charge which means they go flat just sitting there. For things that get used a lot, re-chargeable are best. For things that get used occasionally, then alkaline.
Emergency flashlights, always Alkaline as they have a long shelf life so you know the flashlight will work when you need it.
Emergency radio, same thing.
Smoke detectors, don't even think of re-chargeable here, ever.
Remote controls, alkaline because they last for years anyhow (re-chargeables will need regular re-freshing)
MP3 players, boom boxes, toys, portable power tools, portable TV's, cameras. Any day to day use items are all great places for the Ni-Mh batteries. And anything high current (like drills), the old Ni-Cads are still a good choice.

Both....
Rechargables on some items I use all the time and would need batteries in less than a month due to use.
Others are disposable as rechargeable won't last sometimes if left in items for a length of time

I am getting ready to use rechargeable ones, because I know the disposable ones take forever, if ever, to degrade, and aren't good for the environment.
