The Puritans believed that any respectable work or trade was a calling, so A could not be the correct answer.

One of their complaints against the Church of England was its hierarchy of bishops and the idea of synods deciding religious matters was equally unpopular with them, as they maintained that each individual church congregation should be autonomous, which eliminate C as the correct answer.

This leaves us with B as the only option. The Puritans were VERY big on literacy and felt that every man (and woman) should be able to read the Bible. To this end, they took a great interest in education, and when they established themselves in America, schools were a high priority. Boston even went so far as to authorize "dame schools," which were conducted in the homes of respectable women (often widows) for the purpose of teaching children the basics of reading and writing.

The Puritans believed that everyone had a calling from God. (They did not deny this.) The Puritans gave final authority to the congregation. (They did not even have bishops and synods.) So, A and C are wrong. Therefore, the correct answer is B. The Puritans championed literacy so that everyone could read and interpret the Bible.

They championed literacy. Even their alphabets had religious references: "A is for Adam, B is for Bible..."
