I love music and understand and have writen alot about underground hip-hop and new wave. Im trying to learn more about rock and over looked classic rock to be more specific. As such I have heard some of Rushs music, not to much, and been told great things about those who know about them. I was just wondering what to listen for, what makes them so great, and a defining album. Thanks.

Rush is great because they are original and are not a commercial band yet still have big tours with many fans. And they have been at if for over 30 years. All three members are excellent on their instruments. They have always been great when I have seen them live. Which is like 17 times. If you have not seen the video Rush in Rio you should check it out.

They're all great at their instruments. They've written some pretty catchy and complex songs. Their lyrics are interesting. As far as a first album to buy, I would suggest 2112, the perfect fusion of prog and hard rock, or Moving Pictures, half the songs are constantly played on the radio.

There are very few three man bands that earn classic rock success: The Police, Nirvana....and yes: Rush.

Rush stands out because of their resonant clarity in the studio: their music is perfectly timed and Neil Peart NEVER misses a beat. All three members of Rush are highly talented in both their mastery of their instruments and their artistic quality of their musical expression. You won't ever find that in any of today's flavor of the week "alternative rock bands".

Lie back, chill and listen to ANY Rush song.....and you'll create your own personal MTV video of YOUR interpetation of their song(s). Sadly, exercise of one's imagination is a lost art that sorely needs to return in our lives. But Rush's music makes it easy to do.

it is humorous listening to Lush Rimjaughb whine and cry. I turn him on at lunch just to remind myself that there is an entire subset of folk accessible that rather revere him as some form of 'prophet' or 'genius'. Rush = finished Moron.

Perfectly composed songs. Amazing riffs. Amazing bass lines. A drummer that can't be touched. A vocalist that you could pick out of any crowd. Thinking mans lyrics.

Listen to 2112....you'll get it.

I don't know. That guy's voice...I remember one time somebody put them on, and I was actually starting to like it--until that guy started singing, and me and a friend went: "No no no--that's not right." (It was kind of like Jimmy Stewart's reaction right after he shakes Mr Potter's hand in It's a Wonderful Life.)
