An ocean island chain is merely a range of underwater mountains that have some of the peaks rise above sea level. In the case of Hawaii the mountains are volcanic.

An archipelago is another formation of semi-submerged land that forms an island chain. It is a simple ring or partial ring of islands. The most common ones are the remaining bits of a volcano crater that is partial submerged.

The world chain is used because the mountain range ties it all together.
