There are two answers here. The highest mountain above sea level is of course, Mount Everest, at just over 29,000 feet above sea level. However, the tallest mountain in the world is Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. That mountain is over 33,000 feet in height from it's base on the sea floor, but much of it, about 20,000 feet, is underwater.

The height of mountains is measured from sea level just as the depth of the ocean is measured from sea level. Mt Everest is the highest mountain in the world; the Marianas Trench is the deepest spot in the ocean. The quibble about Mauna Kea is that Americans can't stand not having the biggest. Mauna Kea is nowhere near the highest mountain. Live with it!

By the way, the highest known mountain is Olympus Mons on Mars. It makes Mt Everest look like a pimple.

Well, that depends, because there are actually three ways to measure the height of a mountain. If you measure from sea level to the top of the mountain, Mount Everest is the tallest. A second way to measure a peak is from the base of the mountain to the top, in which case the tallest mountain is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The third way to measure a mountain is from the center of the Earth to the top of the peak. If you use that method, the tallest mountain is Chimborazo in the Andes.
