first off chiropractors are useless, secondally orthopedic doctors dont do spine surgery.....spine surgons do spine surgery.its probably a bulging disc, most middle aged people have then and all you probably need is some physical therapy.here is a great book.
http://www.amazon.com/Treat-Your-Back-Robin-McKenzie/dp/0958269238/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-8163448-7733438?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190254932&sr=1-1

you can get some good ideas for exercises.you dont want to do an MRI unless he is still hurting 3 months after doing therapy.this is because if 5 different spine surgons look at the MRIs you will get 3 different answers to what is causing the pain.Dont do an MRI unless he has numbness in his hands and or feet.the mri could determine if it is a disc issue or a vertebrea issue.then if he needs surgery he will have to see what is best for him I did ADR surgery.

Did you hurt yourself, perhaps twisting the lower back? Could you have a bladder or kidney infection?
I hurt my back about once a year and I have to go in and have injections into each hip. Check with your doctor.
