A variety of things were used throughout the centuries. Pieces of cloth or cotton were used, grass, and if I remember correctly, European women during the Renaissance used something very similar to a diaper.

I have to agree that the Egyptians set the standard for feminine hygiene products of today. Although tampon usage was late in coming to America, there have been records of tampon usage among women of ancient Egypt dating back to sometime around 1500 B.C. They constructed a roll of some fibrous material that they would insert during menstruation, that was also used as a contraceptive.

I helped a friend do a research paper on this quite a while ago, and though I don't recall EVERYthing, I believe Hippocrates, the Greek physician, also recorded that tampons were used among women of ancient Greece.

So we can thank the Egyptians for the creation and inception of today's tampon.

Every generation has the particulars of its generation. Egypt, is the most ancient of the three, no doubt set the standard. Who to say that soft paperlike material could have been used, for they were so advanced. They had access to usable material and could have used something similar to female napkins.

i thought when women were on their time they were separated for the community. there were special "homes" for them and there were containers that they collected the blood in. the blood then was burned and they were purified prior to returning to the community.
I am not sure. maybe this is just the native way. that is what an elder woman told me anyway.
