Clear CMOS, load fail safe defaults, save and exit. If OS is still unstable, try this repair:

Press F8 Key before the windows XP logo comes up, and you will be given a set of options.
See if safe mode works.
If it doesn't you'll need to re-install windows.

try boot into safe mode.
if safe mode is running, then try system restore to previous working date.
if safe mode is not running, boot computer with windows xp installation cd and reinstall windows xp.

put your restoration cd in the rom, and boot from it, then follow instuctions and reinstall the operating system
