I was told that if a bird ingests disprin it will explode. Is this true, or is this just an urban myth.

(Please be advised that I am not condoning this, wanting to attempt this, or think it is anything less than sick, just wanted to know if it was true)

not true, however it will kill them. same as if you put 2 asprin in a bowl of milk you can kill a cat.

they definetly will not explode though. Had a friend who taught biology confirm this one for me...

Been off the face of the planet recently but have clawed my way back to the edge... lol...

Seagulls routinely swallow fried chicken legs into their crops in Ventura, CA, and fly over to Anacapa Island, where they regurgitate the bones, having moved the meat from the crop to the stomach. There are thousands of chicken bones on Anacapa, where only one family lives and no chickens live.
Really birds can swallow all sorts of things into the crop, (a receptacle between the mouth and the stomach), process it a bit. They regurgitate anything indigestible and swallow the good stuff. I have even seen a bird regurgitate the food in its crop in order to fill up on something more tasty!
So frankly, I think birds can handle this kind of thing better than humans can. I wouldn't worry about alka-seltzer or uncooked rice.

The uncooked rice is also a myth. I have never heard of aspirin causing any problems. I know it would not cause them to explode because there is nothing in aspirins that could create a gas when reacted with anything in the bird.

not true, the alka seltzer thing is not true, also the myth about rice is not true. trust me, birds can eat many different things, they find toothbrushes and plastic bags in a lot of seabirds, not to mention tons of trash that is probably inside of birds that like to pick for food at landfills. they're pretty sturdy little critters.

The myth actually is about Alka-Seltzer. Supposedly Seagulls can't throw up - so their stomachs fill with gas and it pops. I can't confirm it though - send it to Mythbusters.
