Most games require that you have an ATI X800 or NVIDIA 6800 display adapter with 256 MB of RAM. Does this mean that I need to get a new video card or just a downloadable/purchasable driver or program? Please help me because I really don't want to spend money I don't need to!

You will only need to upgrade soon if your card is lower than the necessary card level, like what you listed. I would suggest that you find one that is relatively new, a bit more expensive ($100~$150), and has the ports/adapters (for monitor-hookups) you will require.

I would also suggest you look for such a card that is based in DirectX 10. Though very few games use this yet, it is still a good idea to have if you wish to not have to upgrade multiple times. Also check to see that you have the right add-on ports (PCI/AGP/PCI-E) in order to run it, alon with enough space in your case to fit the card.

I'm currently waiting for a MSI Radeon HD 2600, which is a PCI-E x16 card (about $130), to arrive. There are multiple variations, some with silent copper heatsinks or those with fans, both of these varieties come in 256MB or 512MB. It also comes with plenty of adapters, so I'm pretty much covered.

NOT possible with software. You need a graphics hardware upgrade. BUT do not look for those outdated X800 or Geforce 6800. Get the newer card.
If AGP platform, consider the 7900GS AGP, X1950 Pro AGP or 7950GT AGP.
If PCIe platform, consider the 8600GTS, X1950 Pro or the powerful Geforce 8800 series.
Take NOTE that powerful cards also require a powerful supply. Powerful on the +12V rail and not just simply high total wattage.
