It's now 2400. It was 1600 when I took it. There used to be two parts; reading and math. Each part was worth 800 points. They just added on a third part, writing, a few years ago and that's where the additional 800 points get added for a total possible score of 2400.

Overall, it is 2400, but some schools still don't count the essay portion and look at your scores out of 1600.

which add up to 1600
the last section is writing
and that sections only been added in the past few years

Yep. 2400.
2100 is considered Ivy League.
Your average freshman admitted to Harvard scored around 2250.
I think the national average is somewhere around 1500.
