Some modems have a connection for Ethernet and USB. Check the modem and see if you have both.
Both computers will be wired however.

You can install an ethernet hub, both computers plug into it and it plugs into your modem. Most will connect up to four computers, cost is about $10.00.

It does not have as secure connection as a router, which has a built in firewall. Other than that does the same job.

Here is a link on how it works.

The only way to do this without a router is to create a network bridge. to do that, one of the computes must have 2 LAN ports. It should also work if you buy an add on network card with 2 LAN ports.

However:

If computer A is plugged into the modem, and computer B is then plugged into A, A must be on for B to be online. B may be off and A will still be able to get online.

By Far the easiest way to do it though is to just get a router.

Cheap, should do the job, also wireless:

I hvae this one. Works nice:

i know they are wireless, but htey will still do hardwired networks (up to 4 computers) and then you are ready for wireless networking. any laptop will work with these, and a simple add-on card will let a desktop work with these, like I am now.
