For great rates, guaranteed reservations and excellent service, you should check out the Las Vegas Reservation Bureau. They are the oldest reservation service in Las Vegas.
The Golden Nugget would be an excellent choice for a downtown Las Vegas Hotel. It is the only 4-star hotel downtown. They just completed a multi-million dollar pool renovation. There is a multi-floor aquarium, which goes down into the pool. You can swim with sharks.
You'll also be center stage for the Fremont Street Experience.
It is best to take care of your car rental at the airport or make a car rental reservation online for pickup at the airport.
There is a company that provides shuttle service to all of the hotels. Showtime Airport Shuttle - a one-way shuttle trip to any downtown hotel is about $8 per person. Round trip is about $15 per person.

Check these two sites
http://www.travelworm.com
http://www.hotels.com
Compare to the hotel's web site
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/referenceguide-hotels.cfm
You can access every resort in LV from this site
The GN is the best of the downtown hotels, and 4 star all the way.
IMO these are the best value downtown
Main Street Station
http://www.mainstreetcasino.com
El Cortez
http://www.elcortezhotelcasino.com
The Pavillion rooms are kind of handy if you don't mind walking up the1 flight of stairs from the casino. Their tower rooms are very nice.
After those two I would go with either the Four Queens or Fitzgeralds.
Pick up the Fremont Street Experience coupon sheet from the FSE office, located at 425 Fremont Street, it's on the 2nd floor of the parking garage next to Walgreens. Show an out of state ID. You get $10 free play for Binion's & Golden Nugget, plus 2-4-1 buffets for Main Street Station & Fremont and several other good coupons>get one sheet of coupons each, so that you both get the free plays.
You can rent a car at Main Street Station - there is a car rental agency next to the players club - but, you might be able to save some money if you make arrangements ahead of time(check http://www.yahootravel.com for the best car deals in LV)
Taxi info
http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/faresfees.htm
This is the best and cheapest way to get to Fremont St
http://www.rtcsnv.com
If you travel fairly light(carry on luggage) you can take the CAT bus from McCarran to downtown for $1.25 - Go to "Ground Level Transportation 0" which is on your right just before baggage claim. The #108 Paradise & the #109 Maryland Pkwy North bus both run downtown. They stop on average about every 6 minutes, and will take 45-50 minutes to get downtown. Not bad since most of the time you would have to wait 30min to an hour or more for a taxi(2 hours is not unusual if it's really busy)
The El Cortez has a free shuttle to and from McCarran >you do have to let them know 1 day ahead of time you plan to use the shuttle. The only problem is the shuttle only runs on the even hours from the EC to McCarran, so it might not be worth the wait. I would rather just pay the $1.25
Good site for LV info
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com
We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years. >If you have more Q, "add details" or e-mail me through YA. >

i recently stayed at the 4 queens which is a few steps from the golden nugget and it's pretty decent. if you're looking for a place to sleep and shower this should do. i don't know what the wknd rates are but i got a room for 35 a night on a weekday.
catch a shuttle bus instead of a cab from the airport for about $15 round trip. ( i used showtime) you can walk up and down to see who's the cheapest.
hop on the deuce around the corner from jillians on n. lv blvd. and get a 24 hr. unlimited ride pass for $5 instead of paying $2 every time to and from the strip. freemont is very well lit and they have security on foot and bikes. i went to vegas alone and wasn't scared but you will see bums hanging around and sleeping at some of the bus stops and on the strip the police are visible just always be aware of your surroundings like you would anywhere else. i'm a female but no one bothered me and i was out til 5 am.

Guessing about $20-$25.00...each way for the cab. Shuttle is a little slower, but about 1/2 the price forRound trip, about $11.00 to $16.00 per person from the airport to downtown Hotel and back...I like it downtown, and we always stay there. Rooms not as fancy, but less money for those short nights...and you are only 5 to 10 minutes from your bed, from anywhere on Fremont Street! Good Luck!

There are many discount websites you can go to if you don't mind pre paying. Such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz....etc......plus everyone of them will do hotel and car combos......If you don't want to pre pay, you should pick a brand you like, and call them directly and see if they have discounts.
The Gold Nugget is on the "old strip" not the "new strip". When you say you want to stay "downtown" are you looking for Freemont Street (the old strip) or Las Vegas blvd? where Excelsior, New York New York, Mirage, Luxor, Paris, and all the other big name casino and hotels are.
cab rides might be a little much, considering you are on a meter and it runs even in trafic, when you are just sitting there. If you don't mind paying though, and you tip a cabby big, he will give you his card and you can call him round the clock to take you anywhere.

Four Queens has car rentals. They get the first 3 floors of the parking garage with the valet parking. Might be Thrifty car rental, not sure.
Find that website on 2nd link, look under buffets and find the casino official website.
Have Fun. buy the shirt/short, don't lose your shirt/shorts.
Doesn't hurt to sign up for all the club cards downtown, right now Binions casino/hotel giving away $10.00 free slot play. Not sure on the other deals.
Both located downtown (4 Queens, Binions.)

sure there's a bus, it particularly is talked approximately as the deuce and expenditures 5 money for all day shuttle. It departs downtown suitable on the tip of freemount highway and is going very regulary (approximately each 8 or 9 minutes). it may take particularly a collectively as to get to the inns on the strip notwithstanding because of the site visitors and all the stops (there's a provide up at each on line casino alongside the strip). Taxis from downtown to the strip usually value between 10-20 money, counting on what casion you desire to pass to on the strip. i grew to become into merely there lats week and that i consistently used the buses yet like I stated it may take a collectively as to get to the strip.

Do a search for rental cars online for cars at the Las Vegas airport. Alamo comes in at $29/day.

the other answers are pretty good.
As far as a cab- way too expensive and they are all nuts! I'd take the bus as long as you don't have alot of baggage. Its only $1.5 (I think, its been a couple years) and if you get on the 108 it goes straight downtown.
Also, alot of hotels and rental car companies have a free shuttle from the airport.

Go to vegas.com it's a good website for hotel info and deals.
Hotels don't offer car service. You can rent one at the airport, but if you're only there for a couple of days I wouldn't waste the money. Use taxis or the double duece buses to get around.
