"Fue" vs. "Era" - In Spanish which is correct?

If I want to say "Yesterday was Thursday" in Spanish, which is correct? "Ayer fue jueves" or "Ayer era jueves"?

I know that "Fue" is the preterite conjugation of "Ser" and "Era" is the imperfect conjugation. But I can't tell which one to use.

Use "Era" because "Fue" it's more like the verb go, like Yesterday he went to the park (Ayer el fue al parque).
