If y=2x, then everywhere you see a "y" it is the same as 2x. With this thought in mind, the equation 5-y=3x is actually the same thing as 5-2x=3x.
So, if you add 2x to each side of the equation you have
5-2x+2x= 3x+2x (If you add equals to equals the result is still equal)
Since -2x+2x effectively cancells itself out and equals nothing, you can simplify it to
5=3x+2x, and adding the 3x+2x together you get 5=5x, which means that x=1.
So if 5-y=3, then y=2.
x=1 and y=2
So easy a caveman can do it.
