Step 1: Assume 100g sample

Step 2: 100g ~~> 7.195g P and 92.805g Br

Step 3: convert gram amounts to moles

mol P = 7.195 / 31 = 0.2321

mol Br = 92.805 / 80 = 1.16

Step 4: Get the mole ratio by divided by the smallest molar amount

P 0.2321 / 0.2321 = 1
Br 1.16 / 0.2321 = 5

1:5 ratio of P : Br

Emperical formula PBr5

I LOVE these questions!

Ar of P = 30.974
Ar of Br = 79.904

7.195/30.974 = 0.23 1
92.805/79.904 = 1.16 5

Thus it's PBr(sub)5, because it has a ratio of 1 to 5.

You need to say whether the percentages are by weight or by mole of atoms.
