The oil is ok and it has gas. The spark plug is ok. I don't know what else to check. Any suggestions. It is a craftsman walk behind mower. This is the first time I've had problems with it.

Could be that the choke isn't turning off (should be automatic) or you're not turning the choke off (if it's manual).

The choke is a butterfly valve that restricts the air flow through the carburetor when an engine is cold to keep the air/fuel mixture rich (a cold engine doesn't run well with a lean mixture). As the engine warms up, a coil unwinds, opening up the butterfly valve, leaning out the air/fuel mixture (a warm engine doesn't run well with a rich mixture).

So, the symptoms of a faulty choke would be that the engine starts fine, runs well at first, then sputters and turns itself off (maybe with a nice backfire or two). This would be the same symptom if it were a manual choke that you aren't setting right as the engine warms up (look for a little red lever with a butterfly flap imprinted or embossed on it up near the carburetor - that would be a manual choke - you pull it out when you start the motor and push it in when the engine is warm).

Could also be that you have a dirty air cleaner (this would restrict air into the engine, resulting in a choking action) or fuel line clog (restricting gas into the carburetor).

When it shuts off, take off the air cleaner and see if the butterfly valve in the carburetor throat is closed. If so, the choke's your problem. Check the air cleaner while you have it off and see if it's dirty. Also, check the fuel lines for kinks or pinching that might restrict the gas flow.

If you can't find anything wrong, you'll have to have someone look at it.

Had the same problem on a friends lawnmower and it turned out ot be the vent hole in the gas cap was plugged with dirt....if the gas tank cannot vent air in from this hole being plugged, it will create a vacuum after running a few minutes and not allow the gas to flow to the carb....loosen the cap a few turns and try running the lawnmower, if it runs ok, then that's your problem. Take a small pin or paperclip to unplug the vent hole. Could also be dirt or grit in the bowl plugging up the little fuel intake orifices of the carb if that's not the problem---have to drain and pull off the bowl to clean.

There are a few things that it might be. Is it brand new? If not the fuel filter or air filter may be getting clogged. That can also happen if the choke is left on or partially on. That could just be forgetting to turn it off or the mechanism, usually a cable, could be loose and not moving the choke completely open.

Most mower repair shops will do a check and tuneup for $50 or less. You may just have to take it in.

Idiotic solutions from a "professional". What happens once you launch the handle is an engine brake clamps on the factor of the flywheel and a cord grounds out the magneto to ward off the spark plug from throwing a spark. To me that is sparkling which you're nonetheless getting spark when you launch the handle. discover the place the linkage is on the motor for the engine brake (detect by finding for flow whilst squeezing and freeing handle). There could be slightly metallic tab that had a cord run to it. The cord could run by a small loop and the small tab could clamp it in place. If the cord isn't in there, push down on the tab and run it back by the loop. launch the tab and it will carry it in place. If it nonetheless is there, seem on the tab whilst the brake handle is released. it's going to be contacting between the engine brake levers. If that is not any longer, the magneto won't floor out and the motor will proceed to run (under a load because of the fact wreck contacting flywheel floor). Bend the tab in the direction of the lever till touch is made between lever and tab. If the mower nonetheless keeps to run after checking those 2 issues, the cord has come disconnected from the magento under the engine shroud.

How long does it take to restart? If it has to cool down before it restarts it could be the ignition module. When it dies, check the spark. If it has spark, I agree that it would be a fuel problem. Clean the carb and the gas tank.
