1) z/45 = 2/5

First: eliminate fractions - multiply the greatest common denominator (45) with both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

(45)(z/45) = (45)(2/5)

Sec: cross cancel the same terms & combine the rest.

z = (45)(2/5)
z = 90/5
z = 18

2) 0.49k = 6.272

FirsT: solve for "k" by isolating it on one side - divide both sides by 0.49

(0.49k)/(0.49) = (6.272)/(0.49)
k = (6.272)/(0.49)
k = 12.8

Easiest thing to do with fractions is to eliminate them :)

In the first case, multiply both sides by 45.

z = 2/5 * 45 = 18 ~~> z = 18

For k, just divide by the number in front of it, just as you would a whole number. This isolates the variable.

k = 6.272 / 0.49 = 12.8

A similar thing is needed for q

q = 97.41 / -5.73 = -17

To eliminate the fraction in front of x, multiply by the recipricle, 3/32.

x = -51/2 * (3/32) = -153 / 64 Not sure what one would use to simplify that fraction. I believe they are relatively prime.

For the last one, I would start by making your mixed number an imporper fraction: 5 * 4 + 1 = 21.

3 p = 21 / 5

Then you can solve as you have many other equations in this set.

p = 21 / 5 / 3 = 7/5

1. Multiplying the top and bottom of 2/5 by 9 gives you 18/45. So z would have to be 18.

2. Divide both sides by 0.49. This gets k by itself.

3. Divide both sides by -5.73. This gets q by itself.

4. Multiply both sides by 3/32

5. Change the mixed number on the right to an improper fraction, the divide both sides by 3.
