In the British Army it was the Surgeon as they were called then instead of just doctors because their main function was treating the wounded Bandaging wounds removing bullet and shell fragments etc. So they were mainly doing surgical work as opposed to just treating the sick.

The Crimean War was also the first war were female nurses were used on hospitals in the field. Before that only male nurses were used in field hospitals on or near the battlefield.

Her name was Florence Nightingale. She transformed the nursing profession by improving the hygiene of nurses (making them wash their hands, etc.), they had to wear uniforms and in many others ways. This led to nursing being more recognized as a profession and improved the standards of nursing.
