Indictable offense? What type of crimes are considered to be an idictable offense?

There are two ways to initiate criminal proceedings against a defendant.

The first, and most familiar, is the "Indictment" -- this is usually reserved for more serious crimes, felonies and some misdemeanors.

Lesser crimes -- all the way down to parking tickets -- usually cannot be pursued via an indictment. Instead the state files an "information" (or equivalent) that explains the charges.

Hence, the phrase "indictable offense" usually means a serious crime.

It is a offense that could lead to a grand jury looking at the facts and recommending that you be charged with a crime.

That would be a crime that you have to be indicted in criminal court for ... as opposed to say, one that you would just be issued a citation or ticket for.
