My sisters 1997 Taurus LX has been stalling quite a bit lately. When she brought it into the mechanic he said it was a clogged fuel filter...Two different mechanics have diagnosed this as the problem...but I don't think it's normal to have the fuel filter replaced 4 times over the past 5 years. She doesn't put an excessive amount of miles on her car and she buys the same gas as I did when I had my Taurus and I had no problems. Is it possible that there could be something else wrong with the fuel system that could be causing this problem?
She has used fuel injector cleaner and the problem still persists. Any help or advice you can offer would be really appreciated, thank You!

Does it runs fine after a filter change? If so, my next step will be, check why is getting clogged. Most likely the source is at the tank. Some might be in there that is messing is clogging the filter. The filter is doing its job then. One more thing, does she drives on a bumpy road? Some Fords has an emergency cut off valve that triggers by impact. Bumps on the road like dirt roads, if you drive really fast can trigger it. A friend of mine had a Tempo that did that and the mechanic told him that was vapor lock until I too a look at it. It had a warning by the radiator about that switch. After a quick look at the Owner's Manual and a quick reset. Bingo! No more vapor lock :-))

I certainly hope these "Mekaniks" aren;t working on cars. Why do they always say It's the fuel pump and/or filter. Has anyone even slightly tried to diagnose this problem ? The filter has been repeatedly changed, filters last forever unless you have a major problem with contaminated fuel. Fuel pumps don't usually cause stalling problems. There are times but not usually. Fuel pumps usually fail. If you suspect a pump or folter run a pressure test. Now then, need a little more on the problem. Does it stall when driving ? If so, at high speed or low speed ? Does it stall when idling or at a stop sign ? Does it stall cold, hot, or both. Is the check engine light on ? There are a number of stalling problems so need more info. Did any "mekenik" scan for trouble codes ? This is the first thing they should do. If there are any codes post them, it will help.

Hi ... this problem is due to a couple of things.,
1, the fuel pump lifts fuel from the bottom of the fuel tank.... this is where all the crap is.
2, if the car isnt run frequently .. like every day... the crap saths at the bottom ... at the lowest poin..... where the pump is.
3, It may be benificial to have the fuel tank and fuel lines cleaned. It doesnt matter how much fuel injector clean you use... crap in the tank= clogged filter.
I have a Yukon... a 2003 ... i had a fuel pump go bad due to crap in the tank.... and a blocked filter....
Also ... does she let the tank run below 1/4 full... if so then again the crap at the bottom gets sucked in quickly..
Best advise is have the tank cleaned and the fuel lines too...

4 times in 5 years isn't abnormal. A good filter will last 12 to 18 months. If you wash to you could drop and clean the fuel tank.
