I had someone ring me tonight, trying to get me to consolidate my debt......which I explained I didn't have! She wouldn't listen, so I just kept saying "I don't want a loan, I don't want a loan, I don't want a loan, I don't want a loan, I don't want a loan" until she hung up on me!!! I felt better.

You do not have to talk and you do not have to listen. To keep them busy for a while so they have less time to bother others, simply set the phone down gently and quietly walk away, leaving them to talk to themselves for as long as they want.

I do this all the time, and come back a half hour later to hang up the phone.

I've tried a lot of different responses to get telephone sales people to leave me alone...and it doesn't help that I'm a nice person. The very best response I've come up with that works ALMOST EVERY TIME is this....

I simply tell them that I already have whatever it is that they're calling about. It works with the newspaper, loans, debt consolidation, light bulbs, etc.

A pat response that I use goes something like this...."Well, (name), thanks for giving me a call, but I already subscribe to the San Jose Mercury News."

Most of the time they're baffled about how their call list could be so inaccurate and just say Thanks and hang up.

If that doesn't work...and they just won't shut up...I simply say good-bye and hang up the phone. Before you do that, however, tell them to put you on their "Do Not Call List." They can't refuse...it's the law.

Good Luck!

I have caller display, usually these people withhold their numbers, I ignore most calls that do this even though I run a business from home, either that or I put my answerphone on saying to ring my mobile, they never ring unless its someone not selling something.

If they are Asians I usually tell em to **** off, and thats not a racist comment its purely confirming its a call centre ringing you and trying to sell something, as I dont know any Asians.

I feel its an invasion of your privacy and any company ringing people at home should have their trading license withdrawn.

When I answer the phone and they introduce themselves with their first name and the name of a company I've never heard of, I know immediately they are trying to sell me something. They are mostly kids, probably on a minimum wage, just doing their job, so I figure it's not necessary to be rude. I always say, "I'm not interested but thank you for calling. Goodbye" ... and close the line promptly.

I don't understand those who stay on the line or engage in needless conversation, giving out information or reasons to perfect strangers, and then get angry and complain about it.

I tell them I'm not interested and hang up. You are right about them not listening. One time, my son was crying/screaming in my ear while I was on the phone. I told her, I couldn't talk right now, I even let her hear my son's cry. That didn't stop the sales pitch. She was talking over the cries. I said, OK, to mean I heard her, but she took it as I'm interested and wanted my info. From then on, I just say no and hang up.

Ah, I used to be a door to doorer (don't hate me yet, let me explain! It was only for two weeks and I was only eighteen and very very poor with no qualifications! And I stopped because it is just so unethical, and my feet hurt...) the only way to stop them is by saying "I already have that / do that / am that". We have answers written down for us for any other reason, we are taught to go with the pitch no matter what else they say. And it is almost always ripping you off! I'm sorry!!!

After the 2nd time of saying I dont want a loan, if she pressed me again, I would ask for her supervisor's name and number so I could report her for harrassing me, and also tell her to put me on their no call list.

I'd go through with the whole malarkey, make up some fake details. Wait till they get to the bit where they ask you 'how much do you owe'. Time is money to these people, i ALWAYS try to waste as much of it as possible. Try saying, 'hang on one min ute, i'll just go and get them' (whoever they ask for) then go and make a cup of tea. same affect without the hassle! Go back every now and then to ensure 'they're coming, one minute'
Ha!

i'm on the telephone preference service list which sales people are not allowed to call but i still get the odd one and i just tell them that they can be fined up to £5000 for calling me, they soon hang up. i still get market research people calling but i just say i'm not interested and put the phone down. i never give excuses because i have every right to say no.

I don't get them at all any more since I added my details to this service. Once you have registered it takes about a month and the calls stop.
