DO NOT take Midol... It has a habit of making them worse... Take 2 Advil's or 2 Aleve's instead. Put a hot water bottle on your abdomen & try to get some sleep. When you wake up they will be a bit better.
The secret to avoiding cramps is to take the Advil/Aleve as soon as you feel the cramps coming on, then every 4-5 hours for about a day. Once you wait until they get bad, they are very hard to stop.

There are a number of things that can be used to help get rid of menstrual cramps. Medicine like Midol can help with mild cramping. Also, using a heating pad or those self-adhesive pads that warm up are great for cramping. And, as odd as it sounds, orgasms and exercise my help as well.
If your cramping is extreme, you should maybe consider going on the pill. It helps to lighten your period and can often times alleviate cramping altogether.

Best way is to prevent them. Best way to do that is to cut out salt (table salt especially) and drink lots of clear water. While you are having cramps - I use to find drinking hot water with a squeeze of fresh lemon and a little honey always helped. There are several herbal teas that are good too. The other thing that Really helps is walking .. walk walk walk, especially if you have nature trails where you can enjoy fresh air while your at it. Remember to stretch!
... and .. oh yeah - it does get better! ;)

Over the counter painkillers usually do the trick. Lying on your side with your knees tucked up to your chest sometimes relieves the really bad ones. Avoid caffeine, as it can make them worse. Put a heating pad where it hurts the most. Take a nice long bath.
Et cetera.

Try the Diva Cup instead of tampon or pad. It is an internally worn reusable menstrual cup that is used to collect your menstrual flow. It is safer and healthier and should ease your cramps.

If they are excruciating I would say go to the doctor and try to get on Depo Provera. I've always had endometriosis and don't know what I'd do without it.
Try to take a few teaspoons of cocoanut oil with a meal and get more omega 3 fats in your diet.
good luck

Depending on who you are... some people have sex on their periods to get rid of it or lessen it and others may just take some pamprin or other pain relievers for cramps. Ask you doctor as well they maybe able to give you something that will work if other medicines aren't working for you.
Good Luck!!

The best thing to get rid of cramps is Midol.
Second best is ibuprofen. Make sure to read the warning labels before taking if you are taking other meds.
