i don't think that there is aparticular reason on why they look like they are smiling but if you look closely you will see the difference (when you smile you use about 43 facial muscles )yet when you are angry or sad you only use about (17 i think facial muscles) besides not every one who cries look like they are smiling

This is because this world is so happy when you are happy and smiling but once you are sad or is in need of ANYTHING, no body is happily ready to give away their best to you to make you happy. Thats why people try to smile, hiding their grieves at the same time. And those who loves and understand you well, will be able to see your tears even if you are laughing.

I know! I've noticed that when my younger cousin cries, she sounds as if she's laughing! I guess it's just a natural habit most of us have!

they have what you call mixed emotions..like watching your mother in law drive off a cliff in your brand new car that has no insurance on it

idk...i do that too. maybe it's like, a defence mechanism. so people didnt know that you were crying back when people were cave men
