So, I just started my junior year of college and apparently can' do 3rd grade math.

Here's part of my brother's math homework. Could someone explain it to me so I can help him out?

Ben says that he multiplied twice to find the number of cups in three quarts. Describe the steps Ben took to find the answer.

Help please?

First he multiplied by 2 because he knew there were 2 pints in a quart. Then he multiplied by 2 again since he knew there are 2 cups in a pint..

There are 4 cups in 1 quart. So multiplying 4 X 3 should get him the answer. But if he had to multiply twice, then he must have have concluded that 2 cups in a pint, and 2 pints in a quart, so 2 X 2 = 4cups. Then 4 cups times 3 quarts = 12 cups.

He multiplied the number of cups in a quart, and then multipied the number of quarts he had to that total.

I say this because I am not so sure as the other respondees what we know your brother knows. We don't know that he knows how many pints are in a quart or how many cups are in a pint, etc.... It seems to me that the question is about the method of mutliplying when there are many unknowns.

And it seems that the teacher is asking that your brother do an equation rather than find out the solution to how many cups are actually in a quart. and the equation would be x times cups = one quart. and one quart times 3 equals 3 quarts.

Well, three quartes = 12 cups so 3 is to 12 and 1 is to 4. Fractions...3/12 x 1/4 = 12/12 or 1.

So if Ben multiplied twice, 2x3=6 and 2x6=12

2 cups in a pint x 2 pints in a quart = 4 cups in a quart. 3 quarts, x 4 cups = 12 cups in 3 quarts
