I have witnessed this in the locker room, the football players always taunting and screaming insults at the soccer players/cross country runners.

I assume you are talking about high school. Only at that level of maturity (or lack thereof) would you see this.

There are several reasons for this:
1) Social status. In the world of high school, football players are on the highest social rung. While this doesn't play out in the real world, in the high school world, this is reality.
By contrast, soccer players and particularly cross country runners are much lower down the social ladder. Those sports just aren't admired by mainstream students like football is (you never see the cross country guy date the head cheerleader -- its the QB). Top of the food chain always picks on lower levels. Grim reality.

Secondy, football players live in a testosterone filled world, and levels are the highest when they are running around smashing each other. when soccer guys encounter them (in the locker area around practice), the juices are flowing. since most football players are bigger and stronger than soccer players, they are easy targets.

Lastly, football players don't view cross country runners as real athletes. Correctly or not, a lot of football players think X-country is a joke. To some extent, there is credence to this. More than any other sport, X-country doesn't rely on athletic ability -- just will power, particularly at the high school level.

This argument doesn't apply as well to soccer.

You can take heart that once you get out of high-school, this stuff stops, and those big football linemen will need to get by on what is between the ears instead of below the neck.

Well because in this country soccer is below football. So the football players act like they are better. Welcome to America. That is how it is always going to be(that people who are in more popular groups treat others lower in HS and College). Also consider how Americans tend to view soccer. A bunch of guys kicking a ball around never scoring and if someone breaths on them you flop over like a fish out of water to draw a card(a form of penalty for those unaware of soccer) and then get taken out on a stretcher to return 5 minutes later and play again. When a Football player is taken out on a stretcher he rarely returns to play in that game. When they go down to that point it is serious.

nothing against soccer players, I was one for a long time. However, I'd like to ask why soccer players think they're as tough as football players and hockey players? Let's be serious here, everyone knows why cross country runners get made fun of. They're the athletic equivalent of the band geek.

Because you're probably talking about high school kids and the vast majority of them think they're better than everybody else.
