My truck intermittently wouldn't start and I was told I needed to tighten the wires on my starter. I had that done and it ran for 5 days then completely stopped. Now I was told I need to replace those wires but when I called the auto parts stores some said it was the starter cable and others the positive battery terminal cable. What's the difference between the two and is there some way I can find out for sure which I need to replace. Thanks!

The starter cable goes from the battery to the starter. The positive battery cable usually goes to the positive side of the alternator. They both connect at the same spot on the terminal.

If you are having starting problems. Make sure that all of the connections are tight and have no corrosion on them. Positive batt, negative batt, starter power, starter ground, alternator positive, alternator ground.

I was having a similar problem with a series 3 Landrover
I put an extra earth strap from one of the alternator fixing bolts to the bodywork of the car and that cured the problem

It could also be the starter solenoid. This is a device fitted between the battery and your starter motor it looks like a small tin can and sometimes it has a rubber button on the end that if pressed will operate the solenoid manually and turn the engine over.
The contacts get burned so the unit needs replacing

Starter Cable

Simple. The starter cable goes to the starter and the positive battery cable goes to the positive battery terminal. If the starter has a built in solenoid, it would be one cable. If it has an external solenoid the starter cable would goes from the starter to the solenoid and the battery cable goes from the solenoid to the battery.
You need to check all the cable for looseness and corrosion, including the big wire to the alternator, and the ground cables.

They could mean the starter cable as the solenoid engage wire and the battery positive as the cable that actually connects from the battery positive terminal to the starter terminal.

And dont forget to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery before you start waving positive cables around the engine bay otherwise your gonna get fireworks.
