That depends if you are impressed by that "widdly widdly" style (eg steve vai, malmsteen etc), or actual melodic-style playing. In popular music i'd nominate john mayer or slash. Clapton is overrated, so is santana. Chet atkins was a gun, as was stevie ray vaughn. its all personal. Most of us would be happy to be half as good as any of them

It's all personal preference and the type of music you like. There are super fast guitarists, but that's not my taste. I like not only speed, but the actual notes played. For my money, hands down Eric Clapton. He just gets better and better.

For modern rock, I'd probably say John Frusciante. He has some nice guitar solos and is a great guitarist overall, being influenced from many classic guitarists.

There are still some great guitarists from classic rock bands that are still alive too, like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc.
