last year, this guy edited the "we the people" speech, and it was really funny. he won by a landslide....people in my school only vote for their friends and funny people, not people who would actually do a good job. I AM NOT FUNNY AND I AM RUNNING AGAINST PEOPLE WITH TONS OF FRIENDS...how should i write my speech? i don't want to be too funny or it will sound strained...and if i'm not funny, i will get no votes because i'm known as the "person who takes education too seriously"...i'm STUCK!!!!

I'm assuming you are in high school right?

I don't know what to tell you. High school student government is pretty much about how many friends you have and if people dig you. Do you really think teenagers really care about whether or not you will do the job right? I think they have other things to worry about.

I know it sounds dim, but don't give up hope. Just stick with what you know and don't try to pretend to be something you are not. It may backfire and make you look worse. Besides, it's only student government. Continue to take your education seriously and in 10 years when you're making big bucks at a great job, you'll feel better about yourself knowing that the guy who edited the "we the people" speech is working at A&F making $8 an hour.

I know it won't count, but you've got my vote. Good Luck!

Then take it serious. If you're not a funny person then don't try to be. You'll fall harder by trying to be something you're not. Throw away that defeatest attitude and look for the positive things you have to offer. You have a lot of life left, why not live it being you. As you get older you'll find that you will win more and be taken serious, when it counts the most, by just being you.

You could try writing something really dry and deliberately not funny. Those can sometimes be funny. Otherwise, no clue. I actually vote for peeps who do/did a good job.

Explain (politely) to those ignorant classmates what the job of student council secretary IS, and show how you can do it BETTER than your competition.
Not funny, but then, since you aren't a comedian, it is probably your best approach.
