After a rather humiliating run as a theatrical "double-feature" ... the studios re-cut these into two SEPARATE features and released them as individual films (and they STILL bombed in the box-office).

When it came time to release them on DVD - I guess the studios decided to keep them separate & will be putting out separate disks for each one. (Probably so they can soak us for more money as we'll have to buy 'em both to own the whole "Grindhouse" movie... then they'll release a "Grindhouse" double-disk set & get us to buy it again... then they'll do a "special edition"... etc., etc., etc.)

I think it's a real ripoff that they weren't released as a set, too. I doubt it has the hilarious trailers and "lobby ads" from the double feature. My guess is it's a contract or production company dispute. I liked Planet Terror better anyway.
