I have several sunflower plants growing in my back yard. Some of them have big flowers on them and are drooping. This is the first year I have grown sunflowers and I am not sure when to cut them down.

Be Sure the leaves are dried and the flower petals have fallen off, you may want to put netting over the flower head to keep the birds from eating the sunflower seeds, the back of the flower head should start turning brown, at this point pick 1 of the sunflower seed and cracking it open, if its soft and hard to open it is not ready, Crisps easy to crack open it is ready. At this point scrape the seeds off the head, let them dry for a couple more days, be sure to save a few out to plant next year and give a few to the birds, you can enjoy the rest

Once the plant itself begins to die and dry up, the sunflower heads will droop downward.

Once the sunflower disk is dry, they are ready for harvest.

I sincerely hope this helps you.

They can be cut when the get all droopy and wilted. hang them to dry, if the heads are really big, I find a wire hanger stuck through it works good. when dry they should fall out for you, but be sure they dry quickly or they will get moldy. Put them in a warm dry spot for a few days. then just store the seeds til next year and plant.
