It could be colic but it sounds like he is sleeping plenty. A lot of babies with colic don't sleep a lot. They just cry. Still, it could very well be colic. Is he having bowel movements every day? Is he particulary gassy or does he spit up a lot after feedings?

How old is your baby. I often wonder what it must be like to be a new born. They get pushed out of their warm , cozy and dark homes into a place that's loud and bright and cold and it just takes them a little while to learn their routine and which way is up!

I'd call your doctors office and talk to a nurse about this just for peace a mind. You must be very tired and worried, and if nothing else, you will get peace of mind.

Congrats on the new baby!
Good luck!
Missy

Some things to check for:

Does he need to be burped? Crying can even make them need to be burped as they swallow air in between sobs, try burping him.

Hot or cold? Babies like to be warm but not sweaty warm, they hate being cold!

Try swaddling him, wrap him up real tight so his arms and legs can't move much and then hold him. Pick an easy song to sing that won't drive you bonkers and sing it to him over, and over, and over and over again. Repetition is comforting to babies. My baby spent probably the first 3 weeks of his life wrapped up tight, we called him burrito boy LOL.

Don't wear any perfumes, strong deodorants or use heavily perfumed soaps/detergents, he may be bothered by what he smells. Also are his clothes clean? My baby can't stand the smell of sour milk or formula on his clothes so some days we go through 3 or 4 clothing changes.

When all else fails and he's been crying for more than half an hour, put him in his stroller and take him for a walk or throw him in his car seat and go for a drive. Car seat on top of the dryer sometimes works as well. Or pick up one of those units you place under the mattress to make his crib vibrate. I have a portable bassinet that vibrates that was a god send the first couple weeks.

Lots of babies also like swings. My Graco lovin hugs swing is a life saver. He naps in it all the time now.

Does he need a pacifier? The sucking instinct in babies is one of the strongest and if he can't suck on something he might cry.

Also, try to make sure he sleeps in the same place, or at least always wakes in the same place when you are home. My boy freaks if he opens his eyes and sees strange scenery. We rearranged the nursery yesterday and getting him down for his evening sleep was brutal because everytime he opened his eyes he didn't know where he was and started crying!

Babies also just go through crying spurts. Just remember not to let him cry for more than a few minutes without touching him and talking to him gently until he calms down. He might just be crying to make sure you are still there.

Hope this helps!

It's pretty much normal, yeah. Life takes a bit of getting used to. It'll settle down soon. Make sure he's not too hot or cold, and play some music. My daughter, as a newborn, loved John Denver. I don't mind a bit of John Denver myself, but we were pretty glad when she moved on. Now she likes Evanescence.

Okay take him to the doctor more than likely they will tell you its collic, because there is no other reason for him to be crying. Maybe you can try some babymylicon, thats for gas, but please speak to your doctor...My son was the same way I rushed him to the emergency room when he was 3 days old not knowing what was wrong, and that was it....Good luck and congrats!

It does sound like colic. My one year old had it. He would scream non stop from about 1pm to 6 pm. It was just his cranky time. My 4 year old hardly cried at all when he was a baby. All babies are different. Talk to your doctor and see what they think.

You should talk to you doctor and see if he is colic. Thats what it sounds like to me. He might also have gas. Mylicon is a wonderful gas relief drop that works great, but others work well too. Just give him some and see if it relieves him.

That is pretty typical for a newborn..all they do is eat, sleep, poop, & cry.
