It is a 4 mo old Kenmore, and for the 2nd time in 6 weeks is NOT cooling the fridge side. Repairman was here & replaced a "defrost sensor"--which is supposedly a night-time auto-defrost switch.
It sounds like BS to me...anyone know anything about this, or should I tell them to come get this hunk of junk & get a refund???

All the cooling comes from the freezer side and goes out through a little vent into the fridge side (vent opening is controlled mechanically by turning a knob sometimes labeled "fridge temperature").

If the freezer gets stuck in its defrost cycle it will not be turning out cold air and that would be why you're not getting what you want - no BS to that.

If you are unhappy with it see if you can get it taken out but Kenmore's tend to last about 15-20 years (even though they are made by a bunch of other vendors with Sears only providing the word KENMORE to go on them). If it were me I would complain to Sears about the machine and make sure they give you priority scheduling on the next repair if that is needed. I think that will be better than just getting it taken away and a refund issued.

from your question I assume the freezer is working. If the refrigerator is not then it is probably the temp control, or damper assembly. The cooling comes from the freezer. A defrost problem would cause the whole thing not to work. And also the system defrost more then every 16 hrs. Usually 2-3 times per day depending on defrost control. Good luck..

Defrost timers are a common problem, but not this early, and they don't just defrost at night, more like every 16 hrs. Your new fridge should last years without a hitch, so my advice is to make them replace this one and you did get the extended warranty right? Sears refrigerators are made by Whirlpool.

yeah, it sounds like your defrost timer is bad or the freezer is packed too full. you can initiate the defrost cycle yourself, but it is kinda hard to find if you dont know what your looking for. It should be in the fridge section, you will need to pop of a little cap and turn a plastic screw with a flat head screw driver. this wont fix the problem, but it will buy you some time inbetween repairs. good luck.

Yeah take it back and get another one. We had one that gave us trouble like that. After a little research we found out that the fridge had a known defect and the mfg.knew about it and sold them anyway. The mfg. had to fix it but figured it was cheaper to pay for all the service calls than to recall that model.

4 months? demand another one. the defrost thermostat should not go out in Such a short period of time.
is there frost appearing anywhere in the freezer? it may also be the heating element. the tech should have checked that with an ohmmeter.

Set the freezer control to a lower setting. If you have it adjusted for colder, it is robbing cold from the fresh food side.

Tell them you want a new one.

2 problems in 3 months is out of line for a new appliance.

it particularly isn't any longer a DIY undertaking. i does no longer propose tackling this your self. Too many variables in touch and till you're EPA qualified, you isn't waiting to purchase or installation the right refrigerant.
